Happy Holidays from Sterling Services
First and foremost, we would like to thank everybody who took us up on our Food Drive promotion. During the month of November, we offered our Fall Heating Service and Safety Inspection in return for a shopping bag of food items to be donated to the United Food Bank. It was a great success and we look forward to doing it again next year.
As we stare down the end of another year, we find ourselves reflecting on the past year as well as looking ahead to the next. In doing this, we have much to be thankful for. Like most, we are thankful for our families and friends, but as small business,we tend to see employees and customers as family too. This makes for a very big family to appreciate!
Since the weather has turned cool, many of us play a little game called, “how long can I go until I break down and turn my heater on? It’s not unlike the game we play in the Spring beforefinally closing the doors and turning the air on. Sometimes when we slip into this money saving mode, we fire up space heaters to help us hold out. The problem here is that we are often not saving much, if anything. A typical electric space heater is rated anywhere from 200 watts on the low end, which is almost completely ineffective, to your average space heater at about 1,500 watts. Because there is very little air movement driving this heat, these units run nonstop and really only heat a single room. An average sized mid to high efficiency heat pump is operating between 3,000 to 4,000 watts. The big difference is that it is heating the whole house through an entire duct system,so the heat being generated is being utilized to its fullest. It also heats to the desired temperature, at which point it shuts off, meaning a run time of only about 4 to 5 hours per day in our climate compared to the space heater that would run 10 hours straight to hardly raise the temperature on a cold and rainy day. In the event the home is equipped with gas heating, then the math really works against the space heater. Natural gas heat involves very little electricity at all to operate and fuel consumption is efficient on a well tuned furnaceIn our climate the furnaces are sized to deliver enough airflow for the summer cooling mode, which actually makes them oversized for the heating mode and quick to heat a cold house.
Last but not least, the space heater is not exactly the safest heat source. Many fires each year are caused by space heaters. There is also the burn potential that exists and they should really be kept away from young children and pets.
As we sign off for the year, we would like to wish all of our friends, family members, employees and customers a safe and happy Season.
See you next year!
